The Anatomy of a Vinyl Fence

Designed to be low maintenance, durable and budget-friendly, have you ever thought about what makes up a vinyl fence? Check out this overview of the anatomy of a vinyl fence to learn more about this style.

The essentials

Let’s dissect the anatomy of a vinyl fence, starting with the essential parts found on every vinyl fence.

Posts

A must for structural stability, posts are thick, vertical support beams that hold the rest of the fence together. There are a variety of posts, depending on its function. A few examples include end posts, line posts, corner posts and gate posts.

Pickets

The pickets are the thinner vertical boards comprising the majority of the fence. Sometimes pickets are up and down while others create an “X” shape. Typically, pickets are about 2 ½ to 3 ½ inches wide and range from six to 14 feet long.

Rails

The horizontal pieces that connect to the posts and cover the pickets are known as rails. The number and type of rails depend on the vinyl fence style. In general, there are top rails, middle rails and bottom rails.

Gates

The key to convenient access for any style fence is the gate. Vinyl fence gates can either be single or double gates. The style depends on your fence section type and will match the fence’s overall aesthetics.

The additions

In addition to the essentials are the extras that might serve a functional purpose, aesthetic purpose or a combination of both.

Post caps

One of the more necessary additions is post caps, which are on the tops of the posts. Caps come in various styles and colors, from ornate to simple to solar options.

Post skirts

Add a decorative touch and more curb appeal to your vinyl fence with a post skirt at the bottom of the posts. Like caps, skirts come in a range of styles and colors, including one- and two-piece post skirts.
